Studio Adrien Gardère won the competition for the rehabilitation of the Château de l'Hermine, Vannes Fine Arts Museum, with the architects Nieto Sojebano.
Located on the city walls, the Château de l'Hermine is one of the historical architectural references of the city of Vannes. The SAG project, in association with Nieto Sojebano Architects, was born from the desire to maintain the unique urban image of the castle and to create a respectful relationship between the extension and the historic building.
The new volume of the museum blends into the right-of-way of the Château de l'Hermine, adapting to the proportions of its surroundings and evoking in the geometry of its form the characteristic roofs of the medieval town. The envelope of the extension will allow a play of reflections with the rear façade of the castle and will ensure natural lighting in the future courtyard.
By its very materiality, outside the museum enclosure, the extension will blend into the sky of the city of Vannes, while respecting the visual prominence of the castle.
The ambition of a respectful relationship between the castle and the new building of this project combined with that of a fluid interior circulation in the collection's itineraries will allow the collection to meet its new location by offering a new scope to the institution. The dual identity of the place will be reflected in the transversality and dialogue between disciplines, offering the public a place to live and exchange open to all, but also an exceptional cultural programme bringing together fine arts, graphic arts and contemporary arts.
