By unanimous decision of the Jury, architects Atelier Novembre in association with Studio Adrien Gardère and multimedia agency On-Situ, won the international competition for the design of the new Grand Musée Rolin in Autun, second largest museum of Burgundy, France.
Architecture, museography, design and interpretation have all been conceived together to create a strong and ambitious architectural, urban and scenographic project, a genuine museum campus, which enhances the rich architectural heritage of the site and its opening to the city.
The project brings together five historical buildings by creating under the level of a new public garden, a contemporary extension, while heightening each of the building’s specific identity.
The whole project revolves around the circular nineteenth century panoptical jail, working as the metaphor of a compass or a clock, the pivot of the project, guiding visitors in both space and time, for a unique journey into 2,000 years of the city’s exceptional history and collections.
