Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R) and Woods Bagot, with Studio Adrien Gardere, in charge of museography and design, were appointed for Adelaide Contemporary - renamed Tarrkarri - Centre for first nations culture - international design competition organized by Arts South Australia and Malcolm Reading Consultants.
Tarrkarri is a new museum showcasing the past, present and future of Aboriginal culture and its artistic practices across all disciplines. The design of the building stems from the Aboriginal conception of the elements that connect us to a place: earth, land and sky.
Lower level galleries and terraced landscapes are carved into the earth, providing indoor exhibition spaces that integrate the museum's visible, accessible and dynamic reserves with the performance spaces and space dedicated to traditional Aboriginal welcome ceremonies.
The upper galleries break western conventions by introducing exhibition spaces that vary in size, height and light, and offer unique views of the sky, the natural environment and Aboriginal culture.
