The Studio Adrien Gardère designed the scenography for the 50th anniversary exhibition of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, "Revolutions: Art from the Hirshhorn Collection, 1860–1960." This exhibition offers a chronological retrospective of revolutionary art from this period, showcasing over 270 artworks by 126 artists. It explores the cultural and artistic changes that occurred between 1860 and 1960, marked by scientific and philosophical advancements and increasing mechanization.
The scenography establishes a direct dialogue between iconic works by many artists from this period and contemporary works, displayed on colored panels, illustrating the significant influence of revolutionary ideas of the time in a constantly renewed play of perspectives thanks to the circular shape of the building.
The exhibition celebrates not only the collection but also the museum building itself, which is truly an element of the collection. The scenography directly extends the architectural principles of the building, from which the exhibition elements seem to emerge. The building thus becomes a grand time-exposing machine, creating horizons and perspectives between the artworks and artistic movements.
