This première of Alberto Giacometti’s work in China was the largest-ever retrospective dedicated to the artist, with more than 250 artworks, some pieces rarely or never shown before.
Studio Gardère designed a spectacular scenography within the 4.500m2 exhibition spaces of the Shanghai Yuz Museum; deploying the different periods of Giacometti’s work and revealing the strong contrast between “Intimate Paris” and “Vertical New York”, from the small works created in his 30m2 Parisian studio, to his monumental project for the Chase Manhattan Plaza of New York.
This essential question of scale, at the heart of Giacometti’s work, determined the Studio’s design. Each section of the exhibition inspired a specific and original design: from the alignment of the pedestals of the room dedicated to Giacometti’s obsession of the heads, to the reconstitution of the intimacy of his Paris workshop, to a monumental installation featuring the artist’s project for the Chase Manhattan Plaza in a New York’s skyline evocation. As part of this exhibition, the Studio also designed a “Café parisien”, a children workshop and a public photo studio.
