“In the beginning, there are these roads. At the end of the roads, there are farms.”
Thus, Raymond Depardon opens his feature film La vie moderne.
Echoing his words and the film's sequence shots, the scenography becomes topography, it becomes a territory, an invitation to wander, to walk, to contemplate.
Between cinema and photography, these paths offer visitors a vision of Raymond Depardon's work that is both panoptic and intimate.
The long-time and monumentality of the filmed sequence shots of La vie moderne are matched by the horizontality and frontality of the photographed images.
Games of scale, depth of field, backgrounds, and points of view, form a landscape, draw paths, and trace horizons.
Cinema and photography take on their full scope here in a dialogue of shots and reverse shots, landscapes and portraits, tight shots and wide shots. Here, the exhibition becomes a contemporary installation.
Like Raymond Depardon's camera in La vie moderne, the scenography invites visitors to a constantly renewed itinerary through the work of the photographer-filmmaker.
