To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the opening of Cartier's first boutique in Japan in 1974, the Tokyo National Museum presents the exhibition MUSUBI, Half-Century of Cartier in Japan and Beyond: An Everlasting Dialogue of Beauty and Art.
Designed by Studio Adrien Gardère, the exhibition's scenography highlights and celebrates the historic architecture of the Hyokeikan while paying homage to Cartier’s deep connection to Japan and its aesthetic. The design revisits traditional materials, showcasing each piece in a series of niches and tables inspired by the tokonoma and sukiya architecture. The scenography also reflects the bold and dynamic relationship of the Fondation Cartier with Japan, incorporating Japanese industrial scaffolding systems to stage all the featured artists.
