To celebrate Japan’s seminal contribution to its Terrace Theater, the Kennedy Center of Performing Arts invited Studio Adrien Gardere and Reiko Sudo, the Japanese internationally acclaimed textiles designer, to design an installation in the Hall of States.

Inspired by the traditional Japanese fans and  Seigaiha (literally vague from the blue sea) — symbolic of waves or water — Studio Adrien Gardère designed with Reiko Sudo’s unique textiles a suspended sea of fans.

Fantasy in Japan Blue features fabric made from natural material mounted on 115 open fans. Each fan is dyed to correspond to one of the 46 shades of Japanese indigo: Reiko Sudo’s nod to the 46 years of John F. Kennedy’s life.
